In the 80's science has advanced the technology of weapons creating large battle exoskeletons, huge tanks and battleships, and giant helicopters, equipped with futuristic laser, rocket, flamethrower weapons, energy shielding, cloaking devices... hell whatever you can use to kill someone.
Following a long and dragged out Cold War, both sides fighting to be superior, but that doesn't matter anymore, seeing as Russia and America don't exist anymore, the world was thrown into chaos after the third world war, no one remembers the countries names anymore, just finding a way to live with the two factions duking it out over whatever parts of the continents there are to fight over. the Revolutionary Offensive, and the Peoples United Front. Hell sometimes they don't even remember why they fight, only that they hate each other, the RO fighting for what the call Democracy, and the PUF going after generally freedom for themselves and everyone, with no government. Neither side has made much progress other than destroying each other, and the population of the world is slowly declining from the amount of casualties each side has sustained. No one wants to join, but they have to due to conscription enforced by both sides, although there are dozens of small factions trying to keep their homes secure from the war, which ironically has caused more blood to spill than ever. The smallest of the main factions, which is mostly just many of the small factions who banded together, called the "League of Nations" which is enemy to everyone, though they are very hardy and still present a large threat to both of the other factions.
The premise of the game is you play a lieutenant, who commands a small platoon of troops to fight throughout the war.
Main (playable) Factions: Revolutionary Offensive: focused on stealth and hit and run tactics, with fewer hard hitters, and more quick and small units.
Peoples United Front: With larger and tougher units, slow, lumbering beasts of tanks, and heavily armed exoskeleton troopers, and many heavy support vehicles.
League of Nations: a good mix of light and heavy units, that are very hardy, also have the strongest mobile fortifications, focused on the defensive rather than the offensive.

you take off, and get into a hardened bunker that can fit the largest tanks of the arsenals, as the fire rains down, you watch as more troopers go into the bunker, and the various others, a Marauder heavy tank crawls backwards away from the entrance it was recently leaving, but a bolt hits the bunker and a sizable chunk of hardened rock falls out and crushes the tank under it, sending small shrapnel around it, taking down some troopers.

Okay: it's early into a dark night, you're a few miles from your objective, a newly redesigned and very well defended RO fort, marching along, and watch as 5 large artillery cannons take a detour off the road and stop in a small field, then aim up, soon everyone cups their ears and watches in awe as the cannons fire, sending bluish yellow bolts up in the air with bright blue flashes that can probably be seen at the fort. You continue along, and above you large helicopters race ahead caring large covered crates. You finally reach within viewing distance of the fort, the bombardment hasn't worked as well as planned, some shells landed in forest around that might have provided cover, setting them ablaze and leaving three direct routes to the fort. the CO yells "Move forward, i want a forward base in between the escarpments! GO GO GO!"

you move forward and find a very large crate with many supplies, the CO follows and orders to set up reinforcements along the sides of the enscarpment, and you start working on setting up the base. but while you are you look up to see a huge Typhoon cannon, at least 50 foot tall and 40 foot long, it fires huge bolts and is used as both direct and indirect fire, it opens fire and starts bombarding the whole area, all three paths
