Oh vassal, who is your lord? Be you Pict? Briton? Irish? Perhaps even a Northman? Are you a virtuous Christian or a Pagan fluent in the rituals and sacrifices?
You are a vassal lord in the realm of Britain around the late 7th early 8th century. Your duties include raising armies to fight when war comes and keeping peace around the realm, and by that it means brutalizing the peasants and killing bandits.

You start bashing at his shield, where you really hack away at it, cracks and splits begin to form. The frank instead of staying there rushes you and hits you full force with the shield, knocking you down and breaking his shield.
Man, you gave yannic 11 spears, bucklers and tunics for 125 scillingas and 7500 for me for 19 spears bucklers and swords with 1 steel shield and sword? what kind of ****ed up mathematics is that?
lemme calculate, 125 sc. for 11 spears and bucklers(leaving tunics) so, 11.36 sc. per man. for 19 men = 216 sc. Add 20 swords , at the most, 180 sc.= 366 sc. Add a steel shield , at the most, 20 sc.=> 416 sc. now i want a steel helm too.
that's not even how it works, yo wanted shields which are cheap, long swords which are definitely not, a STEEL shield and sword, considering steel was almost a luxury item back then, it's not east to produce.

I roll with the force of the rush (literally) and prepare myself for him to go on the offensive. If he does not come forth, I dash forward and attempt to bury my hatchet in his abdomen.

You manage to deftly bring yourself up and actually bury it in his back, as he is still recovering, he falls to the ground, bleeding out

I finish him by embedding the hatchet into his chest, a gift of mercy. I look around to see who would provide the most opportune target.

Okay, so that leaves three left, against my nine. Excellent. I move towards the Frank in the middle and attack him from behind, hopefully leaving a rather large wound in the back of his head.

You join the messy rabble, but realize, both sides are needlessly out of breath, and right now are essentially trying to find a reason not to fight, a few men limping back home with simple flesh wounds. And the rest of the franks, dragging or walking back, and the men who didn't walk home just sitting

I guess fighting in the sand does that to ya. I hold up a hand to gesture for my men to stop fighting so that the Franks can GTFO. If my men are exhausted, I probably am too. When the Franks are gone, I turn to my men with a smile on my face. "We've won. You fought well. Let's get the wounded back home."

This is literally almost every pre gun powder battle, and some post, battle right there, and fun fact: Even though the ancient times (classical, or Roman era) had some of the largest armies until today, casualties actually really only consisted of 10-20%, and that mostly came from one unit routing and getting slaughtered, but the statistic doesn't count the men who limped back with minor wounds, their cowardly friends escorting them, and the men who just pretended to be hurt.
Anywho off the nerd rant and onto the situation; No one is happy, and everyone is tired. 4 lie dead, and 5 on their side i believe

Those shields could've been the end of us if I made the wrong decision. Sucks that we couldn't get those three guys but we won so who cares? But seriously, I'll wait until they feel like going home. If they don't try to help our wounded, I'll remind them that the wounded were their friends, and that it's their obligation to carry them back home.
