Ok, guys. This is definitely possible and really not that hard. I just beat him without losing any ships and without a commando.
First of all, if you need money either go back and forth between Nordfolla and Namp'o trading wine and paper, or between Haikou and Oulu trading gunpowder.
Next you'll want 3 Viking ships (fully upgraded) and maxed Damage, AP, and Accuracy, or at least as much as you can. If you need more stars you can buy the 2nd cheapest boat over and over for a little while (you won't lose any money). Also buy the upgrades for that boat every time. Here you'll lose money but very little.
The commandos don't really help but if you want to or have the money buy the first one.
Next, have a 15ap explosive perk for 1 or 2 boats. This will do quite a bit more damage than the aimed shot. On the third boat get a good Ice perk for 13-18ap.
When you are playing the match use the perk first, then 2 normal shots. Always have 3x damage selected. On my first try I got him frozen which allowed me to win without anyone dying. I also only had 1 ship with explosion perk, so if you want to skip the ice and just have more ships with explosion you should be able to win easily too.
what happened to Ship of the Line i loved that boat on the first version. By the way... i think the Chinese ship is the worst in all aspects. It looks bad, it has weak damage, and it has low cargo; which is really surprising because Chinese are known for their trade.
also, some things i noticed
1. the little guys in your ships "jump-celebrate" when you win. i saw this only hours after i finished the non premium game. Lol
2. i did not get any legendary perks from quest fights. i think i got three from ambush battles (the ones where a random ship attacks you in the middle of the lake) and the other two from choice battles (ones where you choose from roaming ships)
3. some tip: do not sell any perks AT ALL. i think... I THINK... the perk system resets whenever you sell a perk, therefore dropping your chances of finding a legendary back to zero. I THINK.
4. the maxed out skiff looks awesome. wow.
5. the kraken was weak.
6. why is the setting in an enclosed lake? it feels kinda... wrong-ish?.
