Is there anyway I could practise some AS coding without getting the flash trial first? I have experiance in Java and C++ so I'll get a free trial of flash and see what I can do in 30 days. Would be nice to practise at first though.

If you have good experience with OOP languages, you should be able to learn AS and play with it using Adobe Flex SDK (free).

There are some of my favorite sites that walk you through actionscript. With your solid programming background, you'll be able to quickly understand what Flash can do.

1) Ed Mack
2) TonyPa: who's very protective but has one of the best sites.
3) and last but not least OOS

... oh and just to make lonewolf cringe more ... go to some of the best experts in the topic of Flash development and some extremely interesting flash experiments. It seems that the European beat the US into the ground on flash innovation.

Yes, this "stuff" is difficult, but MindEdge is a hungry soul thirsting for answers. I'm just pointing to the "watering holes".
