What is there to know about character licensing in games? I've seen hundreds of games featuring video game, comic book, and cartoon characters, and I'm wondering if there is a rule of thumb pertaining to the copyrights of those characters. Does Armor Games post these games? Is there a rule of thumb as to whether characters can be used? Perhaps permission is needed from the owners? Does it change depending on the company? Do I only have to state they belong to the respective companies? I don't know where to start looking for this information, so maybe you guys can help.

Nothing yet! I'd like to use various video game characters in games or movies, but before I commit to anything I'd like to know if I could publish my works containing video game characters without permission or a hefty licensing fee.

As far as i know, just as long as you are not making money off of it and you cite your sources you're fine, but i would double check that.

Yes, you have to give credit to the company that owns the rights to that character in order to make it legit. If you are making money off of the game I am not sure if that would work, it would depend which character by which company.
