What are sappers and what did they do in WWII?

A sapper is basically a combat engineer, in WWII they would have made bridges, cleared minefields, and dug emplacements, among other such duties.

Some crazy bastard also had his men tunnel underneath an enemy trench and blow up a few tons of TNT, but I think that might have been WWI.
