When did I ever say "attack with the axes" in that plan?
Have the workers build an encirclement around them as quickly as possible, and make it out of the reach of them; it's a tight circle, so even with a wide girth between the workers and the researchers, it would still be a tiny space. If the researchers start to charge the workers, then the soldiers can use their speedy wedge formation to attack from behind and at least get the researchers to back off from the workers.

The circle is purely a defensive formation, so any attempt to charge would be an embarrassing fail anyways. xP

How do they stick them?
I said to give the researchers a wide berth; that means build the construct away from them but still around them. Then the researchers would have to move forward to attack, which they can't do, because they're in the circle formation.
The soldiers pretty much don't even enter into the equation, here.

Wide berth means a lot of space.
A lot of space means a lot of space between the workers and the researchers.
A lot of space between workers and researchers means researchers will have to walk or run forward to attack.
Researchers having to walk means they will have to walk forward, meaning they have to walk or run in a direction.
Researchers having to walk or run in a direction means that the other direction is vulnerable to attack, also because the researchers are in a circle formation, which is defensive only, which means it is extremely slow to move.
Vulnerability and slow movement means that the wedge, which is an offensive formation, which means it moves quickly, can attack it then quickly fall back while the researchers are still regrouping and trying to turn around in their slow moving defensive circle formation.
This will give the workers enough time to construct a barricade.
