Germans were headed to the oil fields in Caucasus, but Hitler sent them to take Stalingrad because leaving a major enemy city in your *** as you advance is generally a bad idea. Russians were ordered "Not one step back" Germans were ordered "take at all costs", immovable force meets unstoppable object, you get the drift. Germans took Stalingrad at first, then the Russians besieged the city to retake it, the battle dragged on and on and oooooooon that by the time Germany finally let go of Stalingrad their resources and manpower had been bled dry. This was the turning point of the Eastern Front.
