I take the money, stuff in my backpack or something, exit the pub, get my weapon ready (not drawing it but putting my hand on the handle and preparing) then I cautiously go out into the alley.

You enter the alley but thehooded man is not there. You hear a noise and draw your sword. The man steps out of the shadows. He takes off his hood. (This means I can change it if you want.) "Thorn! Buddy!" you say. Your halfling friend smiles. "I got you there, didn't I?" Befor you can ask him where he's been, there is a shriek. You look at each other, and nod. You rush out to see a giant spider's leg smash a small building. What do you do? (Sorry, I like to write long storylines.)

Actually, yeah; I start side-stepping and go opposite from Thorn (with the monster between us). Basically a flanking manuever.

The spider sees both of you with weapons drawn. With a roar, its hairy leg swings at you. You dive out of the way. The spider looks at Thorn and tries the same attack. This leaves a leg about 3 steps away wide open. What do you do?

I yell and charge at the leg, slashing wildly (but expertly and epicly at the same time).

The spider, wails in pain. Then it turns to lok at Thorn. It lowers its head and flicks its rear above its head. "NO THORN!" A white substance pins Thorn to a wall. Seeing Thorn can't escape, the spide moves in for the kill. What do you do?

I run as fast as I can, leap onto the spider's head, and start stabbing the spider in the head. So technically, I am just trying to distract the spider and get its attention onto me.
