The software from Microsoft, SilverLight is a powerfull software for animation (just like flash). And with it can made any animation that Flash can. So, for games it's not so good, but i need your opinion.
"As far as players go, it's idiotic not to have both."
Why is that? Competition is good if you ask me. Would you like it if there were only 1 browser, 1 operating system, 1 search engine?
I sure wouldn't.
Although Buttersnack prefers Flash over SilverLight (possibly because of Silverlight/Macintosh incompatibility?), I think he is saying that one should have both players on their browser regardless of which one they program in.
I agree with your statement about competition. Hopefully SilverLight will give Flash a run for their money and maybe Adobe will lower their prices!
Jeffweber, why would you not want to have both? They are free, and having them only allows you to do more. Can you not play Flash games? If you can, you have both Players.
And yes, I would love only having one Operating System because I am sick and tired of my Mac's incompetence.
I prefer Flash because I know it very well, I can actually use it on my computer, etc. If you want to use Silverlight, go ahead, but do not expect easy publicity or profit going down that road. Simply submitting a Flash game to Kongregate will get good amounts of money and plays.
And you can get Flash for about 100 bucks at a college.
Where are you quoting the $100 price tag? The best price I can find so far is www.academicsuperstore.com and the price is $250. The academic edition allows the user to install the software on two computers.
If someone buys academically priced software , he/she needs to be careful about the licensing. Often the software is not licensed for commercial use.

My bad, I mis-read your original post. I just re-read it and I agree 100% with your point. Plug-ins are free and install in seconds so why do so many people make such a big deal about it.
