Shoestringg brought up Ender's game, which I enjoyed for the same reason. the games they play sound amazing, even though the reason for it is dark it sounds like a lot of fun.
But, for me, I pick: The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series, for too many reasons. The concept of the guide itself is interesting, but the whole concept of the book, a regular human seeing the universe is amazing. Easy to take the book and sit there for hours reading. It's one of the few books I've had to buy multiple times, as I've given my copy away to a few people who end up loving it so much, that they ask to keep that copy.
