I try to understand where the south lies, by, perhaps, using the sun or the stars or something to get oriented, and then go that way.

Well, the compass is always pointing south, so you know which way is south. So i am assumeing you mean you want to see what IS south? From what you can see, there is another island, this time with a bunch of trees and looking very tropical. Suddenly you hear a a pained scream, like some one dieing inside the cavern, with the boat.

You head down and find the captian, dead, next to the naviagation consol where he was, alive or whatever he/it/the illusion was. The body fades away...

Suddenly, a lightning bolt hits the wirl pool. You black out and the last thing you see is the ship falling in. You wake up later on a tropical island, your in a crude hut and the engineer is next to you. "ah, your awake, i was worried you died. I know your confused, so i will explain..." "We had all abandoned the ship and got in life boats, we spoted the island and headed here. We have been here for 3 days and made some crude shelter and found some sustainible food" You get up and look out side, seeing some wreckage on the beach and scattered crude huts with varius people from the boat.

After gaining my senses, i get up and take a quick review of our situation, than i take a look at the sourounding area and what it looks like.

You see that the deeper parts of the island are filled with trees and many people cutting them, then something catchs your eye, over by a group of people talking, is the captain.
