Story from FSBG: It is the year 2280 earth made contact with many different alien species making the desolate space of past into a habitat crawling with different species but all is not well, many different wars were caused by the Xenophobia of earth in their past. ---- During the bloody war between the newly inter-planetary Human federation, and the Midor-Fandor Unified nation; as the land battles rage on. (Also if you want to revive FSBG I can do that) In space, even worse ones occur. The Humans in their ignorant ways have declared war on the Fandor and Midor whose first intentions were to establish colonies and trade posts and now raise mighty armies. You will play in a small single seat fighter and make ends meat in the army, and then eventually have ships of whatever class you please.
Races: Fandor-Midor Unified Nation --------------------------- Midor: Tall, red aliens with long faces and slender bodies, they are super smart but weak. Their space tech is by far the best in terms of weapons, all their ships are bristling with guns, and their ship armor isn't bad either. But boarding is almost nonexistent (Boarding is of importance). Live to 250
Fandor: Almost a brother race to the Midors, they are human sized with very broad shoulders and a pig like face, their skin color varies from green, to dark grey. stupid and barely have any armor on the ships, like they were held together by super glue and duct tape and the weapons are fair, but almost undefeated in boarding with their awe inspiring melee weapons. Live to 150.
Human Faction ------------- Human: Great ships, with strong armor and fair weapons and below average at boarding.
Helghast: They have a completely pale white complexion and are much slimmer than humans this is a slave race, under the grateful control of the Humans who they shall die for almost a foot shorter than your average human. Super advanced armor on the ships building off of human tech with fair weapons and weak boarders. Live to 40.
Mercenaries ----------- Malkien: Mercenaries, fight for any side that pays they are foot taller than the average human, pale purple-blue complexion, with long prehensile tails with cat-like eyes. All around average. Live to 120.

if there is any you're still not clear on, just ask me.
Then you can still make it linear., but more flexible and not a giant snowplow. Working towards the way you lime it, would you really want to play if the GM made you fail building a house not because you lacked the materials or skill, but because he doesnt want you to l have permanent residence?
the thing is i don't know how to work them towards it without enforcing it
By making everything they do wholly unimportant in the long run while preparing them for your plot point without shoving it down their throat. A player will probably try to improve him/herself given money from unimportant side missions and a little bit of pushing (say, a bit more difficilt or specialized missions)
Say jim-Bob just finished a smuggling mission for 2500 credo its, moving his total to 6000 since you didnt force him to immediqtely commit the money to somethiing. Also say you are planning for a major terrorist attack later that will spark a civil war/biracial feud and will open up a big job. Given that you couldnt possibly expect every player to follow the same path given the reigns, you could adapt this mission to fit their capabilities instead of one unnegotiable task.
For example, since Jim-Bob bought a fancy new Serella corvette for smuggling, perhaps his mission is to drop off a bomb at the foreign embassy on a different moon and GTFO, while Jo, a gun for hire and assassin, needs tobassault a freigter and steal/sabotage an important shipment. The flexibility is demonstrated here, while the non-snowplow is allowing them to spend the money how they wan qnd specialoze thekselves. As time goes on You can make each plot point less flexible so it isnt an endless vortex of crap and you can make awesome endings and the sort.
But then it would require me to do something OTHER than my usual war game, like a spy game or something and I really don't like them. I don't know I like it when it's easy to direct someone like a god **** war game like this one, but now everyone hates them

Which is why you meed to widen your horizons amd try to make your own forms of common genres. And with a space game like ive been talking about you never really have to commit to any set gameplay theme or style.

But it's the only kind I like, it Involves a lot of straight up action, the only other kind I'd be comfortable with that isn't linear is a caravan game
And that you can't play in....... Loco, rejoin D&D, actually do something in the SPGT and I'll soon have my thread back up. If you're bored, it's your own ****ed fault.
Noobs, please bring the main game back, two of my all time favorite characters are in it and I really miss them.......
