It doesn't cause any damage but the scanners say that there might be lifeforms on the planet.
I start by introducing algae to mars that would slowly grow and help make oxygen
It works at first but then the algae gets wiped out by something.........or someone.

I fire a storm of nukes upon the entire planet from a base on Earth, then send in a swarm of meteors to kill anything that might have survived.
The nuke get shot down by a green laser and the meteors where just a little too small and burn up in the atmosphere.
I make sure it's not a bug, or something else harmful.
The scanners indicate nothing harmful and no major changes except increased cell regen.
