Discuss. General Tavern rules apply. (No mudslinging, be respectful, etc.)
I'll open with the statement that people should not have guns. No one at all, except the armed forces, and even then, keep the guns on the bases. Cops should carry riot shields and armor instead of guns. If they need crowd control, use Water Cannons.
Supporting evidence: the following skit:
What's your reason?
Setting: A gun shop, modern day.
A Customer walks into the gun shop and asks the Shopkeeper, "Hi, i'd like to buy a gun please."
The Shopkeeper pulls out an application form and asks the customer "Alright, what's your reason for wanting to buy a gun?"
The Customer says "I need one for personal protection."
The Shopkeeper nods. "I have just the thing for you, I guarantee you cannot get any more personal protection than this baby right here. What i'm about to show you offers so much protection, it can stop a shotgun shell."
The customer, very interested, stares at a full-size Riot Shield, the kind the police use. He scoffs. "That's not what I want, I want a gun!"
The Shopkeeper shrugs. "Are you sure? This fine piece of equipment will protect you more than a gun ever will! It's very strong, reinforced titanium and kevlar..." by now, the angry Customer has left.
Later, another Customer enters. "Hi, I need a gun."
Again, the Shopkeeper clicks his pen and pulls out an application form. "For what reason?" he asks.
The Customer hesitates, than says "Hunting."
The shopkeeper smiles. "Of course! I love to hunt. Hunting is a wonderful sport. I guarantee that this item will give you the maximum amount of satisfaction you can ever get from hunting! Here, this is the sport at its peak." And he pulls out a Crossbow, complete with crosshairs for better accuracy.
The customer shakes his head. "No, I want a gun." he states.
The shopkeeper reluctantly puts away the Crossbow. "Are you sure? With a gun, it's so...boring, just pulling a trigger. And it's unfair to the animal, with this you give the deer a chance and have to chase it for up to an hour, just like the Native Americans did back in the day! Unless of course..." He fails to finish his sentence, as the pissed off customer has left in a huff.
Later, a third customer walks in. "Hi, I'd like to buy a gun." he says.
The shopkeeper holds his pen at the ready. "For what reason, sir?" he asks.
The customer glares. "I dont need a reason, read the god **** second amendment "THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS." It's in the constitution you idiot!
The shopkeeper merely smiles. "Of course, I have the perfect thing for you. This gun is covered under Second Amendment laws, guaranteed!" And he holds up a 200-year-old, civil-war-era musket, complete with rusty bayonet.
The customer shrieks. "No, man! I want a Glock, a shotgun, something better than that civil war crap!"
The shopkeeper merely smiles. "I'm sorry sir, please come back when they update the second amendment to include those types of guns. Here, i'll even give you a discount..." the shopkeeper holds out a discount to the enraged customer, who tears it in half and leaves.
Fourthly, another Customer walks in. "I really need a gun, now." He says.
The Shopkeeper holds his pen and application form ready. "For what reason, sir?" he asks.
Instead of stating his reason this time, the Customer snatches the application form and looks at it. There, in the spot titled "Reasons" is a circle for "other".
"Other! That's my reason!" the Customer declares triumphantly.
The shopkeeper shrugs. "Very good answer sir." he says, while pressing a button under the counter. Two cops arrive at the shop in less than a minute and cuff the Customer.
"Hey! What the *PROFANITY* ARE YOU *PROFANITY* GUYS DOING? I'VE DONE NOTHING WRONG!" He yells, almost breaking the glass of the windows.
"Actually, you have." The Shopkeeper begins. "the "other" reason, by exclusion of the other reason, can only include wanting to kill or rob someone. Therefore, you were thinking about commiting a crime when you selected "Other" as your reason. Caught you red-handed, trying to buy the tools necessary to commiting a crime. You confessed to it when you selected "Other"! Take him downtown, please." The cops nod and take the Customer away. The last thing he hears from the Shopkeeper is "Oh, and I knew it was you all those times!"

Moral of the story: You do NOT need a gun for a particular activity. In any given activity (And I challenge you to give me a valid, legal activity for which you would need to personally own a gun), there are many other options. Why buy a gun for personal protection when a Riot Shield blocks shotgun shells? Why buy a gun for hunting when the point of hunting (and every other sport) is satisfaction, and since you get more satisfaction with more challenge, and since a crossbow offers more challenge than a gun, you'll get more satisfaction with the crossbow. Why buy a gun based on the Second Amendment when the Colonial-age guns were either giant cannons or black-powder, muzzle-loading Muskets? Did the Founding Fathers have AR-15's, and SPAZ-12 shotguns,And AK 47s, not to mention all the accessories like laser scopes and hollow-point bullets? I dont think so!

The only way you can disprove my argument is to give me a valid, LEGAL activity which requires you to personally own a gun. This excludes Skeet-shooting, because the facility can and should/will provide the gun. Until anyone can do that, YOU DONT NEED A GUN, NO ONE NEEDS GUNS! They're WAY too dangerous and make it too easy to kill someone! Why have something you dont need?

I'm pretty sure there's no federal law against it, other than maybe in high-traffic, regulated places (airports, gov't buildings, schools, etc) or certain types/lengths of knives. States and cities may have specific laws for those, but I'll look into it.

I wish you could walk around public with butterfly knives. There is literally no advantage using a butterfly knife compared to using a regular knife. It's an irrational ban.

Sorry, we're talking about guns. : P

it is.
but in a situation your brother was in, the biggest gun ever wouldn't have saved him. because they probably shot him dead befor he knew it.
(i dunno the real situation. this is based on the info you gave.)

I wasn't suggesting a gun would have helped my brother. I was saying that if his murderers had a low power handgun, it wouldn't have mattered. It didn't matter what type of weapon his murderers had they still would have killed my brother.

that is why you want your guns right? to defend yourself.

That's not the main reason for me. I just enjoy using and shooting them. I enjoy the history behind the gun. I don't really like modern new fangled guns too much. I don't get the same enjoyment out of an all plastic glock that I do from a wood handled revolver. Different strokes for different folks.

What is the legislation about carrying like knives around in public?

There is a very negative stigma of people who carry knives. I get weird looks and people who ask me all the time "Why would you carry a knife?" or "Are you gonna stab someone?" while they're borrowing my knife to cut something. I blame Hollywood for the negative stigma towards knives. I always carry at least one knife for utility purposes not for self defense or stabbing people. It's very handy to always have a sharp edge around. No looking for scissors or using your teeth or nails on things. Makes life a whole lot easier.

It depends on your state and local laws. The only federal law pertaining to knives is ones about importing and commerce over state lines of switchblades. Most states ban switchblades, gravity knives and balisongs as well as putting a restriction on the length of the knife. Daggers and bowie (or clip point) knives are banned in certain states as well. There's also restrictions on how you carry the knife. Some states say it has to be visible others say it has to be concealed. You can look up your state law at this link http://knife-expert.com/sta-law.htm

Take it up with your state legislature. There's no federal ban on balisongs. There's an organization dedicated to knife rights called kniferights.org. Through lawsuits they've managed to overturn a lot of knife legislation in a few different states already. I'm not really a fan of them because they use the second amendment and classify knives as weapons to overturn those laws.

Butterfly knives are classy switchblades, and sure, they can be concealed, but having a one-handed knife can be a handy thing in situations where you need your other hand and a larger, blade-and-hilt knife would be too cumbersome, i.e. the construction profession. I think knives should be legal, because it isn't like criminals won't get them. And they are considerably less deadly then a gun in terms of range and ease of use (they are difficult to use compared to a gun) so you may as well keep them perfectly legal.

They aren't allowed for anyone because if you make it legal for one specific group of people the rest will get jealous, there will be people who join just to get one then quit, and criminals will always have illegal weapons.
Balisong (butterfly) knives are illegal because they will injure you really easily. I don't see why people don't use folding knives that are easy to open. I have many and I can flip them open with one hand slighly slower than a switch blade or balisong. a

I'm not sure how this supports guns, because the same argument can be used against you.

and is used against them multiple times already. =)

It didn't matter what type of weapon his murderers had they still would have killed my brother.

from most other weapons he could try to run away from.

That's not the main reason for me.

exceptions there. but it is 1 of the biggest reasons given by gun lovers.

Um, I am pretty sure that any knife can injure you easily. It's a knife. Balisongs have a shorter blades compared to KA-BARs, or even kitchen knives.

True. I was just letting you know where I'm coming from. That's all. I'm not a gun nut. If the government comes to take my guns away, I'll just vote the dummies out of office. Then, I'll go and pick my guns back up. It's pretty hard to pass laws the American people don't want. Kinda how a democracy works.

I think he was referring to the flipping manipulation it takes to open one. I carried a balisong for a few months as my main utility knife and I never cut myself flipping it open. I just did a short simple flip to open and close it, nothing fancy. I did cut myself trying to do some aerials with it. It's the advanced tricks you can do with the balisong that can be dangerous. Though, its still safer than juggling knives or chainsaws and that hasn't been outlawed. They're illegal because of the negative stigma attached to them. The whole Hollywood movie mentality that every mugger/street tuff/rapist uses either a balisong or a switchblade.

There are balisongs with blades as long as the Kabar fighting/utility knife. Look up baliswords and check this link out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbcsGY3cOok

Either way, there is not much point cracking down on a flip-knife, especially when its hilt needs to be longer then the blade just to effectively work as a folding knife. In my opinion, a drawn sword looks considerably more dangerous then a balisong, but let's follow Hollywood.
Anyway, should knives be relatively legal?

That is the New Yorks new gun control law, you may read it if you want. I feel sorry for those New Yorkers out there.

Why don't you pull out parts that you disagree with? I'm skimming through it but so far I don't see anything wrong with it.

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government."
-- George Washington

Said the man who help founded this great nation.
Said the man who lead troops in a time of rebellion.
Said the man who was ten fold more educated than today's youth. Go ahead, ask them what the Bill of Rights are, ask them about their country, and its history and presidents. They don't know; they don't care. But they sure know how to put condoms on and use birth control.

People who are for extreme gun control are just uneducated. Its as simple as that. They have little to no experience with guns, and think that disarming people will actually stop crime. They are completely delusional. And apparently have no bearing in history.

Just liking prohibition stopped booze. It didn't. It made it worse.
Just like banning meth and crack; that didn't work.
Just like banning weed, that surely didn't work.
They are just uneducated.

Stalin, Hitler, and Mao disarmed their countries. Millions were killed thereafter. Believe REALLY need to read about Mao. That guy was a MONSTER.
History repeats itself. And anyone who thinks that it cannot happen to this country is a **** fool.

I will not disarm.
I will not register.

Hey dude, I am one of those young people you said that doesn't care, and I have to say I do care. And the bill of rights are 10 amendments added right after the constitution was signed because not enough states would sign it unless they were put in right after. The bill of rights are unallienable rights all citizen posses, these rights prevent a tyranical government from basically controlling the people like puppets. But of late the Government has been stomping on the Bill of Rights and the constitution. On that point, when was the last time there were checks and balances between all 3 branches? I haven't heard the supreme court going after any laws made recently for being unconstitutional, if they did their job they would of shut down obama care. On topic, to the guy on the previous page I will pick out specific parts I don't like tomorow, I just don't have the time right now to go sifting through it and trying to find the specific words.
