You are an entrepreneur. You want to start a business, right?
What kind of business? Who knows? Here's a list of them.

Medical Clinic***
Factory*
Research Lab***
Prison
Restaurant
School(primary or secondary)**
School(college)***
Make your own

Now, we all know that the above is a little vague. Why? Well, that would be because you will be given opportunities to branch off.
Also; you see those little asterisks next to some of the businesses? That indicates what you and/or your employees need to have in order to work there. Of course, a higher degree would also be acceptable
*-High School Diploma.
**-Master's Degree.
***-Doctoral Degree.
The higher degree required, the more money people are willing to pay.

EMPLOYEES
At any point in time, you can start hiring people, but be warned, if you do so you will be absolutely swimming in resumes! It's your job to decide who you want to hire for the job based on the resume and the interview. There is no maximum number of employees that you can have, nor is there really a minimum, but the prudent entrepreneur knows that balance is necessary. Why? If you have a big business later in the game but not many employees, chances are that you're understaffed and your employees that you have will start doing sub-par work. And if you're a small company with too many employees, chances are that you will be paying too much in employees' wages and won't make a lot of money. So be careful with that. There are minimum wage laws in place, but you can try to skirt those, as well as other things such as working conditions. But if an employee tells on you, you'll pay a fine, so watch out! Other than minimum wages and working conditions, anything is legal. You can have holiday bonuses, vacations, insurance, employee benefits, etc. Even though this costs money, the more of these things you give your employees the happier they will be. If they are unhappy, they could quit, do badly, go on strike, or something like that, so be careful.

DEGREES
You saw above that some businesses require a degree, and you need a degree to run them! Unfortunately, it costs money to get a degree. Here are the degrees and their costs.
High School Diploma: $100
Master's Degree: $1,000
Doctoral Degree: $10,000
Now, as a basic rule of thumb, the higher education a job needs, the more money you stand to make on that business, so it's really a gamble.
You start the game with $50,000, so you have enough for any degree.

...If you are going to get a degree, get it now. I do not see why you would want to get a degree in-game, that would take up all your time.

Looks good.
Okay, so, you are looking to start a new company; a prison, to be specific. The state has given you a small facility to start with, it's only got 10 bunks, 1 cafeteria, and nothing else. However, there is room to expand; there are several empty rooms with nothing in them that you can purchase and then build in.
But first, you need two things: prisoners, and employees. How will you get that?

EVERYONE, IF YOU ARE STARTING WITH A DEGREE, YOU MUST SPECIFY WHAT FIELD IT IS IN. MBA? MEDICAL? PSYCHOLOGY? PHILOSOPHY? CHEMISTRY? WHAT?
To start, you need a location to have your business at. You could search for a vacant lot...

Well, the police department is keeping its rookies for now. You'll have to find a way to hire them on your own.

You put an ad in the paper for chefs(-$50 per day). Any potential chefs will now send you their resumes, for you to review, and if you like their resume, you can call them in for an interview. If you like how the interview goes, you can hire them.

Well, they were already going to do that anyway.

Well, how many uniforms/nightsticks/food do you want?
